Hold Fast in Hard Times (A 31-Day Series) — Cliffhanger (Day 1)

Hold Fast

Do you ever feel like a small ship adrift on a stormy sea?Β  How do you stay afloat when the waves relentlessly come crashing down over and over again?

On a ship β€œhold fast” implies that rigging is tied securely.Β  During inclement weather, sailors would actually wrap themselves in the lines to help maintain their grasp. Β  Seamen often tattooed this phrase on their knuckles as a reminder.Β  With this information in mind, I had to smile when I read Hebrews 4:14 in The Message:

Now that we know what we haveβ€”
Jesus, this great High Priest
with ready access to Godβ€”
let’s not let it slip through our fingers.

This sailor is securing herself to Her Savior.

May He tattoo these two words on my heart:Β  Hold fast.

I know He specializes in stormy seas, and He won’t let me slip through His mighty fingers.

How do you hold fast during hard times? Let’s dig deep and discover the secret for the next 31 days….

DAY ONE — CLIFFHANGER

Cliffhanger

Years ago on a fun Friday night, I gathered with a group of friends on a cozy couch for a movie night.Β  The suspenseful flick began with a rescue mission.Β  Two mountain rangers put their lives on the line to save a wounded friend who was stranded on a dangerous precipice.Β  My heart rate increased significantly as the security line that harnessed the female character suddenly snapped.Β  In a second, the tides turned, and the rescuer herself hung precariously over a chasm in grave danger.Β  The movie was titled “Cliffhanger,”Β  and Sylvester Stallone reached out his brawny arm with extended hand toward his partner.Β  I’d seen Rambo save the day in so many movies before that I was completely caught off guard when the woman’s fingers slipped out of his grasp.

Honestly,Β  I wanted to turn the movie off at that point.

I must admit that sometimes life kicks me in the gut and makes my heart race just as if I am the star of my own personal cliffhanger.

Have you ever been there?Β  Your secure foothold on life crumbles around you, and you are left dangling over a dark chasm of affliction.

Here is the thing I need to remember.Β  God is the hero of my story.Β  His mighty arm is holding me fast.Β Β  He will not let me go.Β  He will give me a firm place to stand.Β Β  He’s promised me a heavenly happy ending.

Who stood up for me against the wicked?

Who took my side against evil workers?

If God hadn’t been there for me,

I never would have made it.

The minute I said, β€œI’m slipping, I’m falling,”

Your love, God, took hold and held me fast.

When I was upset and beside myself,

You calmed me down and cheered me up.

  1. This sounds like it is going to be a wonderfully encouraging 31 days. Thank you! I feel as though I have been holding fast for awhile, and yet I know that others have it so much harder. I can’t imagine where I would be if I didn’t have Him to hold fast to. Thanks so much for this post. Looking forward to what you have to share in the coming days.

  2. Thank you for the encouraging reminder to hold fast to God. I’ve been there, done that, and am possibly facing another chance to put it into practice. I don’t think it’s by chance that I linked my blog following yours! God is good!!! Looking forward to the next 30 days of encouragement!

  3. “God is the hero of my story.” Love this, Lyli. Too often we want ourselves to be the hero (me included). But it’s always about him, beginning, middle, and end.

  4. This is beautiful! I’m looking forward to more posts in your series! I have definitely experienced some cliffhangers of my own. Clinging hard and fast to God is how I prevented myself from falling into complete darkness.

  5. What a fantastic analogy and description. Indeed I know very well the feeling of hanging over the cliff. Thanks for this inspiring post. I am glad I found you through Missional Women blog link-up.

  6. Hi,

I love that scripture about holding fast! In hard times, I run to Jesus and pray, and he always come through for me. Visiting from Spiritual Sundays.

    Blessings,
