Sweet Victory

I remembered today.

I was chatting with a friend when I recalled how God spoke to me.

God spoke to me while I was rocking away on the porch at Cracker Barrel.

Earlier that day, Bruce and I had decided to hit the road.Β  We meandered around town and spent lots of time laughing with each other and being silly.Β  At one point, he said something that reminded me of the lyrics of an old hymn, so I broke out into song.

Right there in the front seat of our Honda Pilot, I declared an impromptu silly hymn sing.Β  I put on my best twang accent and belted out the first verse and chorus to a few hymns.

I sang loud and proud and held nothing back.Β Β  The joy welled up inside and spilled out.

I ended my medley with a rousing version of “Victory in Jesus.”

A couple of hours and stops later, I spent a few sweet minutes rocking on the Cracker Barrel porch.Β Β  Right there as I faced the sunshine and let the breezy afternoon caress me, God smiled on me.

Somewhere in the middle of Brad Paisley and Clint Black, God decided to have the Cracker Barrel loudspeaker play His tune.

My heart grew warm as the twangy lyrics washed over me.

I HEARD AN OLD, OLD STORY
HOW A SAVIOR CAME FROM GLORY
HOW HE GAVE HIS LIFE ON CALVARY
TO SAVE SOMEONE LIKE ME

God reminded me that He sees me.Β  He is singing a victory song over my life.

Some days, I forget the victory is already won.Β Β  I feel defeated and overwhelmed.

The last three days have kicked me in the gut in the worst way, but today I’m humming a new tune.

I will keep trusting.Β  I will raise my voice and sing.Β  I will laugh deeply.Β  I will rejoice in my triumphant Savior.

Sweet victory is mine.

I Peter 1:3-9

  1. There’s nothing better than twanging out an old gospel hymn! I love it when my husband and I (and now our kids too) sing loud and corny and exulting — especially in the car! Thanks for your great essay, and for hosting us today.

  2. Lyli,

What a “sweet” reminder! In this life we will have tribulation … but … one day … we will have complete victory and in the meantime, we have Him singing and rejoicing over us!

    Thanks for sharing,
    Donna

  3. I’m sorry you’ve been facing trials, but am SO thankful that God reminded you of the victory we have in Jesus. Love how He did that! Thank you for sharing His sweet reminder with us, Lyli! Praying for brighter, Son-filled days ahead.

  4. Those who sing, pray twice is one of my favorite saying. Great story. Sorry you have had a couple of rough days. sending up a prayer for you right now.
