Your Way

I like getting my way.

I love eating the last Oreo.  I’ll take the pretty Barbie doll and give you the Ken with the missing head.  I’m calling shotgun forever.

Inside me dwells a 5-year old in pigtails.

I’m cute, and I know it.   I know how to work the room, and I can pitch a fit and turn on the waterworks in five seconds flat.

Why me?  I want it now.  I don’t like veggies.  Mine.  Mine.  Mine.

I like demanding my way.

Sometimes, my prayers turn to tantrums.  Why me, Lord?  What’s taking so long?  I don’t like this.

To pray big, I must put my big girl pants on, get off my tricycle, and let go of what I’m clenching in my greedy little hands.

We can’t pray effectively until we get in touch with our inner brat.  When we see our own self-will, it opens the door to doing things through God.  Instead of singing Frank Sinatra’s song “My Way,” we enter into God’s story and watch Him do it His way. No one works like Him.

~ Paul E. Miller, A Praying Life (p.161).

Lord, may it be Your way, not mine.

Let’s Talk:  Is “My Way” your theme song?  How do we lay our Oreo down?

Let’s Pray Big in Community:

This year, my desire is to lift up holy hands and “Pray Big.”   Want to join me?  I’ve created a private “Pray Big” Facebook group for like-minded sisters to share their stories and surrender each one to our mountain-moving God in prayer.  Let’s cry out to God together.

  1. Wow, I know how you feel. I want it my way a lot too. just to surrendering to Him takes trust and a lot of faith. I will check out your community. Thanks.

  2. Oh, ouch! My inner brat! I love that quote and the way you drove it home with such practical and honest illustrations. We do want our own way. Thank God that we have a Savior!

  3. Enjoyed reading this post! It is so true though, we all possess an inner brat. It’s obnoxious and annoying most of the time, but when we exchange that inner brat for an inner peace and understanding that our life is not our own then it becomes something beautiful.

  4. Prayer is an open hand. I love the last part of Miller’s quote, it’s His story, enter in and watch Him do it His way. No one works like Him. Amen to that!
