Call Home

On Friday, I worked late.  Around 5 PM, I tried to call my hubby.  Talking to him energizes me and helps me to keep going on tough days.  Isn’t it great to chat with someone who makes you smile?  Unfortunately, we did not connect.   I tried calling several times, but he did not pick up.  Later, he did send me a text message during my meeting that made me smile.

Just as I love chatting with my man, prayer is a lifeline for me.  Connecting with God on a daily basis provides the strength and focus that I need to put one foot in front of the other during a dark day.   This week, as I was digging “Into the Word,” God reminded me about the importance of this daily discipline — it’s not something that I should rush through because getting on my knees before God helps fuel my day.

When Christ walked on this earth, He carved out daily time for connecting with the Father through prayer. As I read through John 17 this week, I discovered a gem of a prayer —  a prayer that Christ prayed for you and me.  Jesus is our Intercessor — He daily stands at the right hand of the Father as our Advocate.  I love the requests that He laid at the feet of the Father in John 17:

  • That they may know You (v. 3).
  • Protect them by the Power of Your name (v. 11).
  • That they may have the full measure of Your joy (v. 13).
  • Sanctify them by Truth (v. 17).
  • That they may all be one (v. 21).

I am so thankful that my Savior prays for me.  This week, I hope to connect with Him more intentionally by carving out some time to sit quietly at His feet with focus — not just a rushed prayer as I head out the door, but a chunk of time where I rest in Him and gain the strength and focus He desires to grant me.

How do you put prayer into practice in your life?  Do you have a special place, a time, a journal?  I would love to hear from you in the comment section below.

  1. I also enjoy receiving calls and texts from my husband. Hearing from him can make my whole day. However, talking with God is even more important. I sometimes wonder why it’s so hard to remember this, and why it’s so easy to take it for granted. I have to remind myself every day, and even moment by moment to be in communion with Him. Thank you for sharing this, and for the great reminder.

    1. I so struggle in this area, Shari! I am just not a morning person, but I know that if I carve out time in the morning, my day runs so much better. So glad you stopped by today! 🙂

  2. One tip I learned from a pastor a while ago is to not say “Amen” at the end of my prayers. That way I stay in an attitude of prayer throughout the day. I do conversational prayer and praying for others on the spot often during my day. But I’ve been convicted lately that I need to have a more intentional prayer time. Just heard it in our message Sunday, so this makes 2x in 24 hrs! I’m so thankful there’s never a busy signal and that God always “picks up.” Thanks for your post!

  3. Lately, I have been finding it rare when I spend focused time in prayer. I need to do more — more out loud. More written down. More on my knees. Most prayers are in my head — thought prayers, so to speak.

Oh, how I do love it that the Savior prays for us, lives to intercede for us, that the Spirit prays for us. Amazing. So to grow more like HIm, I guess I would need to do more of that, too.

    1. I love the idea of writing out prayers to the Lord — I would love to carve out time to start that discipline — even if it’s just one time a week for now. so glad you stopped by today, Kathleen.

  4. I’ve been thinking a lot about prayer and how we communicate with God. It gives such a boost to remember that Jesus intercedes for us. thanks for the great post! Blessings, Lyli!

    1. It is pretty amazing to me how important prayer was to Christ — it was a lifeline to Him. I can’t forget that — praying that I can be more purposeful about prayer.

  5. When my father-in-law was dying this winter I returned to my morning ritual of Bible study and intentional prayer time, and I’ve kept it up into Lent now. I can see a huge difference in my day when I start out with some quiet time with God — I am less apt to rush my kids or yell at them in the morning craziness. Quiet time with God centers me for the rest of the day.

So glad you’ve linked up — welcome to the Hear It, Use It community!

    1. So true, Michelle! You are pointing me straight back to the 46th Psalm: When we practice being still before Him, we know He is God — then, everything else falls into place.

  6. We are truly blessed when we have a God fearing Husband who knows how to cheer us up…and more so to call on the Lord for His line is never busy and you can call on Him day and night anytime. For He is just a breath away…Praise GOD
