The Wardrobe

In preparation for my wedding three years ago, I spent an outrageous amount of time, energy, and money to secure the perfect dress for the occasion.  Then, I sat through several alteration sessions to get the fit just right.  All of this for a dress I wore only one day!

This week as I was digging “Into the Word,” I came across a passage that reminded me that God desires to clothe me — it’s a peaceful process as long as I cooperate and lean into Him.  His wardrobe always fits perfectly:

So, chosen by God for this new life of love,

dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you:

compassion, kindness, humility,

quiet strength, discipline.

Be even-tempered, content with second place,

quick to forgive an offense.

Forgive as quickly and completely

as the Master forgave you.

And regardless of what else you put on, wear love.

It’s your basic, all-purpose garment.

Never be without it.

Colossians 3:12-14 (MSG)

So, this coming week, I am going to pray that God’s love will be my best outfit — the one I grab from the closet when I want to look my best.  The one I want others to notice.   The one that makes me look like a million dollars.

Q4U:  How do you daily choose to wear God’s wardrobe?

Every Monday we will be working our way through Anne Graham Lotz’s 52-week study “Into the Word.”    Hop on over to the 3dLessons4Life Blog Facebook Page to join us as we dig into God’s Word together.

  1. I love the correlation here. Sometimes we forget to clothe ourselves in God’s love…and therefore forget to extend it to those around us in need of His grace. Thank you for sharing this – it is a beautiful post. hopping over from Playdates. A Little R & R (www.littlerandr.org)

  2. Love God’s fashion sense 🙂 I use this verse often when I’m helping my little ones get dressed in the morning. Probably because their mommy needs to hear this reminder most! Have a good week!

  3. I love this imagery you combine here. What woman doesn’t remember that craziness of the wedding day? But our Bridegroom offers so much more…Beautiful, L.

  4. I love this, too! I love that it’s active…something we need to put on daily. It doesn’t just happen. Thanks for sharing. Oh, and I love Anne Graham Lotz! Praying for your study through her book!

  5. I love this verse and your analogy! I remember my wedding day and all the fuss and time I put into it. I need to put that same energy into God’s word and living out his truths! Thanks for the reminder!

  6. Loved this… going to find a way to post the quote near my closet or where I do my make up! “pray that God’s love will be my best outfit”…I always have it, just need to make it my outerwear instead of my underwear! TY! xo

  7. Yes, HE is the provider and I DO try to dress according to His call on my life, both physically and spiritually. And HE has good taste, as opposed to my junky choices, especially when I was younger.

NOW, one little funny bit. When I was marrying Dave the budget was tight and I wasn’t sure what would land in my path. We were marrying in September. In August, I got off the bus from work in a local neighborhood and there were wedding and prom dresses out on the sidewalk rack for sale. I dug through them and came across one that was my size, and reduced in price from $180 to $25. That definitely fit in the budget. I tried it on and it fit OK. It wasn’t a style I liked in terms of the neck collar and sleeves being nylony and silky, but too boring. A friend of mine remodeled the dress. She redid the neck, the sleeves and the waist, adding a purple material that was very chiffon-style. This was her gift to me. It was perfect for me. THEN, 1-1/2 years later, I loaned it to my sister who was marrying in Tacoma; took it to her when I went out to the wedding. THEN, a number of years later, I sent it to Uganda with my Ugandan son so he could give it to someone or it could be torn apart, with material used in any way that was needed. So… it now lives in Africa with someone or many-ones who were able to take bits and pieces. Cool, huh? For $25 it’s been thousands and thousands of miles away from us and blessing others.

Sorry to take such a long time, but you got my heart chuckling and as I’ve finished this, I might actually post it some time, b/c it’s a good/funny story.
